WHY FUNDRAISING?

Since its inception in 1993, Camp Kirk has generated operational funds through camper fees, various fundraising events and through private and corporate donations.  All funding has been as continues to be generated through the private sector, and of this we are very proud.

The annual cost of operating Camp Kirk is well over $500,000

Here are some facts about learning disabilities which may best illustrate the reasons for Camp Kirk's existence and it's mission.

  • 1/10 Canadians has some degree of learning disabilities.
  • The most common long-term condition suffered by children up to the age of 14 is learning disabilities.
  • Only 3% of school age children with learning disabilities receive special services within schools. The majority of students with learning disabilities are either not identified or receive minimal service.
  • Almost 60% of adolescent suicides had previously been diagnosed as having learning disabilities.
  • In the past 2 decades, the link between learning disabilities and delinquent or criminal behaviour has been established and confirmed. Research shows that between 40-70% of young offenders have learning disabilities.
  • To keep a young offender in a group home the annual cost is $70,000. A reform centre is $95,000.

To keep the camp accessible to as many children as possible, we have kept our camper fees low while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

It is vital that Camp Kirk continues to exist and realize its goals and aspirations. We need more champions to help us achieve and hopefully exceed these goals.

"THANK YOU"!

Every year, since 1992, we have held a fall fundraising event for the benefit of Camp Kirk. Over the years, it has become our most significant source of funding, thanks to the financial contributions made by many corporations and individuals. We would like to acknowledge and thank those who have so generously contributed to this year's event, "A Night At Camp".

We would also like to thank the following Friends of Camp Kirk:
4Print.ca (a division of Musson Copy Centres Inc.), BMO Bank of Montreal, The Bishop Strachan School and Sleeman Breweries.

A special thank you also goes to: Scarborough Lexus, Paul and Vicki Hand, Maris Uffelmann and Dean Connor, Donald Ross, The Binder Brothers, Toronto Linens, the Staff and Friends of The Bishop Strachan School and the Camp Kirk staff.

Andrew came home just glowing (psyche and suntan) and just so confident and more mature. WHAT DID YOU DO? WE NEED TO KNOW! The camp experience certainly went beyond our expectations in what it would do for him. We thank you muchly....
