When Henri Audet came into our lives in the spring, I did not realize how great of an impact that he and Camp Kirk would have on our lives. My two sons, Sean (9) and Liam (7) have greatly enjoyed and benefited from the friendly environment and nurturing while they were at camp. There is a feeling of caring and a close-knit family atmosphere, while Henri instils values and responsibilities subtly. Children with any self-conscious inadequacy feelings can surely feel accepted there as Henri has honed his skills, allowing each individual to have their own space and develop at there own pace. Liam is an out-going, energetic character with no inhibitions. He loved camp for ten days and wanted more. He keeps asking if Henri would also have Winter Camp. Liam is a real social butterfly and needs to have his wings restrained somewhat. Sean has a wonderful sense of advanced humour for his age and likes to explore and really get into what is happening. At times Sean takes live too seriously. He is a perfectionist, which can make him very hard on himself. With positive reinforcement and calming patience, we are all learning to appreciate each other and ourselves better. Both of the boys grew in their outlook on life after their camp experience. I felt very comfortable leaving my boys for the first time at an overnight camp and I had a good feeling there were being nurtured in nature. Having three sons with attentional difficulties and being a single mom has been very challenging. Being at Camp Kirk has been one of the best things I could give the two youngest ones - free to be who they are - without having to fit into any one category. Camps such as Camp Kirk are very much needed for the child to learn his/her own self-acceptance in a nurturing environment in order to maximize their potential. We could all learn from the ways in which Henri Audet and his staff enable a child to realize their goals and feel good about themselves. Sean and Liam's Mom
