Dear Sirs, Our twelve year old daughter, Jenna, had a wonderful camping experience this summer - she attended Camp Kirk. Camp Kirk is a very special, caring place for children with learning disabilities. Learning disabled children, in the course of each year, face academic and sometimes social difficulties, which can greatly erode their self-esteem. The focus of Camp Kirk is very obviously to build this self-esteem and make each child feel very special and worthy. They certainly succeeded with our daughter. She just thrived and grew emotionally during the three weeks she attended Camp Kirk. She was challenged, encouraged and shown positive ways to express her feelings. All these things had not been evident in the larger camp setting she had attended the two previous summers. Henri Audet, Sian Phillips and the staff so very obviously care about these children. We had lunch at the camp when we visited on our daughter's birthday and were very moved by the feeling of fun, happiness, caring and love that was generated in the dining-room. Our daughter had a birthday celebration she will never forget. There were many highlights for our daughter at Camp Kirk. She loved the ropes course, but the one thing she talks about the most is canoeing in Algonquin Park. Three counsellors took her and two other twelve year old girls portaging for three days and two nights. They taught our daughter how to canoe and she has great memories of cooking spaghetti in the rain. Most of our daughter's friends are not learning disabled. They achieve academic success, success in sports, etc. more readily than she does. Thank goodness for Camp Kirk and all the very special people there who have made a difference. They have made our wonderful daughter more confident and positive and have helped her believe in herself, her strength and abilities. Our two great kids, Jenna and her ADD brother Mark, all being well, will both be attending Camp Kirk next summer. Jenna insists on it! Thank you to Henri and his staff from the bottom of our hearts!
